Nuno is a practicing curator of contemporary art and a doctoral researcher. His work looks closely at the so called “thematic group shows”, in vogue at the worlds’ biggest museums and biennales, while asking the following questions: How are artists selected? What alternatives to the exhibition model do we have? Can an exposition be more than the sum of its parts?
After finishing a Curatorial Training Programme at DeAppel Foundation Nuno started a doctorate by practice as an attempt to make the “curatorial process” visible. This meant on the one hand his practice became more transparent and accountable, and on the other that this recently appeared curatorial discussion gained consistence in the arena of academy.
The strategy, one could say methodology, in this particular research was:
• To close up the gap between curation and research by practice, by creating a new platform of dialogue.
• To implement visually creative methods for selection and display of expositions, providing alternatives to the current model.
• To document and assemble the information as research, once again deciding what projects to include and how to display them.
• Maintain a commitment to “viewing the process” as a way of allowing further scrutiny, throughout the research.
• Channel the research findings (in the format of a critical portfolio/thesis) back into the areas of curation and research.
