The Visual Research Centre played host to two residency programmes from 1999 to 2004. The first, EMARE, ran in partnership with the School of Television & Imaging at the University of Dundee and New Media Scotland. EMARE is a network of European Media Labs which offer artists a two month residency to experiment with and develop their practice. The purpose of the programme is to enable collaboration and closer relations between European artists and media organisations.

The second, the Research & Development Fellowship was a collaboration between DCA and the VRC with support from the Scottish Arts Council. The aim of the Fellowship was to enable an artist based in the UK to benefit, through the development of their work, from the unique creative environment of the VRC and DCA. As part of the Fellowship, the Fellow was expected to produce an exhibition, held in Centrespace, and engage with the public programme at DCA through activities such as artist talks, workshops, performances etc, as appropriate to the practise of the Fellow.

The Fellow received a fee plus a materials budget and had access to VRC and Print Studio expertise and equipment, plus was able to negotiate use of other DCA and University of Dundee (Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design) facilities as required. A self-contained, two bedroom flat within the VRC was also provided.

At present there are no residency programmes being hosted by the VRC.
